Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Dikwa LGA in Borno State, located in the northeastern region of Nigeria, has experienced prolonged geopolitical conflicts, largely driven by insurgency and inter-communal tensions. These conflicts have severely disrupted economic activities, particularly inter-community trade, which has traditionally been a vital source of livelihood for many local communities. Geopolitical conflicts affect trade by disrupting supply chains, limiting market access, and increasing security risks for traders (Alhassan & Musa, 2023). The study will investigate how these conflicts impact trade relations between communities in Dikwa and examine the role of local, state, and national governance in mitigating these effects.
The study will explore the extent to which conflicts have hindered economic interactions between different ethnic groups and communities in Dikwa, the effects on local market dynamics, and the broader economic implications for Borno State. Additionally, it will analyze the responses of local authorities and trade associations to mitigate the effects of these conflicts on trade.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The ongoing geopolitical conflicts in Dikwa have led to significant disruptions in inter-community trade, affecting the economic stability of the region. These conflicts, compounded by security challenges and inadequate infrastructure, have created barriers for traders, limited access to markets, and increased transaction costs. This study seeks to understand the specific effects of these geopolitical conflicts on inter-community trade in Dikwa and explore strategies for restoring economic activity.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is important for policymakers, local government authorities, and business leaders in Dikwa and Borno State. By understanding the impact of geopolitical conflicts on trade, the study will provide valuable insights into how to mitigate these challenges and promote economic recovery in conflict-affected regions. The findings will also contribute to broader policy discussions on conflict management and economic resilience in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Dikwa LGA in Borno State and the impact of geopolitical conflicts on inter-community trade. Limitations include the difficulty in accessing data due to the security situation in the region and the potential bias in responses from participants involved in trade and local governance.
